Just what you want is the valve leaking when you are jarring up. It’s a plastic bucket from thornes about 8yrrs old. Anyone had any experience with replace the plastic valve or will it always leak

I have the same problem, Bridget - also a rather old plastic Thornes bucket. It's really time that I invest in a stainless steel tank - but in the meantime, and before I do my next lot of jarring, I think I'll buy a new plastic valve from them, and perhaps also a couple of plastic seals.

I bought one of these - works a treat - no drips. (Well, nearly no drips and 10x better than my Thornes one or the SS tank one I got from Germany which is better than the Thornes one. If it fits, I would recommend.

I think Thorne's do a gate like that (undoubtedly more £££ though). I've become a master at placing the jar 'just right' under the standard valve and managing to catch the drips. 1 lb jars are a doddle, 3/4 lb jars trickier and 60 x 1/2 lb jars are a real pain.

It’s mended! Husband took it to bits, cleaned it and working fine now. I’ll get another few years out of it!

I use a glass Pyrex 1l jug....fast efficient. Jars need washing afterwards as always an odd drip.

I ordered one of these Bridget ... save your money!
The action is pretty smooth and I expect it will be a neat non-drip cutoff. However, the gate is incredibly stiff to operate and needs two hands. Unless the honey tank weighed a ton, or unless I can work out how to loosen it off (adam might know), it will join my large pile of "Stuff that should work better".

Sorry if you bought one on my recommendation if it's no good. I have a few un-used items as well!

There's a screw in the middle of the handle which reduces the spring pressure. With mine, the screw is sticking out about 6mm. The first move of the handle can be stiff if it's not been used for a few days but after that it's OK. And it doesn't drip in between uses. (Not sure why the picture has been flipped by 90 degrees).

Thanks Adam ... I'd loosened the screw but not that far. I'll have another go. Having just jarred 100 small bottles with the drips (from my current honey gate) driving me nuts I'm more than ready to give it a second chance ;) I'll post an update in due course.

At ~£8 it's one of the least expensive errors I've made if it doesn't turn out OK.
