Anyone hear of Queen bees passing on disease causing bacteria through Vitellogenin a protein in egg yolk, The protein travels from the queens blood to a liver like organ and then to her eggs it is consumed by developing bees imparting imunity against local Illnessess. I saw the Article in this months National geographic and if you google Vitellogenin there are lots of articles on it, Just curious.

There's good evidence on viruses being passed vertically from the queen via eggs to the progeny workers ... but the last thing we want on here is another virus thread. I'm not aware of bacteria being transmitted in the same way, but what do I know?

FS - I did find a 2009 paper that implied AFB transmission with varroa but nothing later than this. My search was prompted by the sudden rise of AFB in NI in 2015 associated with higher than usual levels of varroa
