How does Thymol actually work?

Having looked recently and again today I'm still not having much luck finding a plain english explanation as to what Thymol actually does to Varroa. I thought I'd hit the jackpot when I found it described as acaricidal only to find that was a posh way of saying "lethal to mites".

Vita website says it has a general effect as a cell membrane disruptor; does it affect chemical messages that allow varroa mites to select cells to enter for breeding in? Vita say they have been monitoring for mite resistance to Thymol and this has not been found yet.
