There's a rather fine National Geographic time-lapse video of bee development doing the rounds on Facebook. Saw it first on the Ulster Beekeepers page yesterday.
There are several striking points in it. The internal happenings in the head is one, but the thing that struck me most was the rotation of the larvae, apparently eating their way through their puddles of brood food.
Metamorphosis looks to be a rather uncomfortable process.
